I served as Assistant S3 under Major Treadwell, Di An, then XO, C Co under Captain Blair at Lai Khe, Vietnam, 1966-1967. As Asst. S3 helped develop and execute battalion operation plans in support of infantry ops...did much helicopter flying to field ops in support of their ops...As XO of C Co., spent much time keeping Highway 13 and 1 open through mine sweeping and demolition, road and bridge repairs from VC IED damages, tunnel destruction, iron triangle ops, conducted convoy ops, deep jungle work cutting landing zones dropping in from CH 47s, clearing out trees with explosives and chain saws, clearing massive jungle areas with bulldozers, explosives, reverting to infantry during the height of combat operations.
I am proud of my time "in country"...the scariest, most exciting and adrenaline-pumping time of my life...almost re-upped for a 2nd Nam tour...but hey! decided to go back to the world...

Dear Richard (Dick)
Thanks for leaving a message at the Guest Book of our website. I remember you as one of the lieutenants who came to Dian as a replacement for us โ€œfirst year folksโ€. (I went home on 28 September 1966). I also recognized your name as being on the members roster of Veterans of the First Engineer Battalion. I hope you can attend the 2021 reunion in the Washington DC area.
